Legacy phone synchronization tool designed for use with older phones to share data between Windows systems (like XP) and a connected device.

Microsoft ActiveSync is a software application that was developed by Microsoft to synchronize data between a computer and a mobile device. It was primarily used to synchronize data between Windows-based computers and Windows Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

With ActiveSync, you can synchronize a variety of different types of data, including email messages, contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, and notes. You can also use ActiveSync to transfer files between the computer and the mobile device.

To use ActiveSync, you will need to install the application on both the computer and the mobile device. Once it is installed, you can connect the mobile device to the computer using a USB cable, and ActiveSync will automatically detect the device and begin synchronizing the data.

ActiveSync (for Windows XP only) is only for use with a Microsoft phone. Simply said: it can manage the content of your mobile phone from a Windows desktop PC.

This program works with certain versions of Microsoft Outlook, connects to the phone and keeps your data up-to-date. In addition, ActiveSync can also manage users, configure connections and more. You can also upload and download images and videos from your phone.

Unfortunately with this version of ActiveSync, you can no longer connect with your wireless network or LAN, therefore you should already have the appropriate USB cable.

Don't forget, the application is only designed for use with Windows XP systems which have not yet updated to SP2.

To conclude

ActiveSync was discontinued in 2012 and replaced by Windows Phone App for Desktop, which is a similar application that is used to synchronize data between Windows-based computers and Windows Phone devices. However, ActiveSync is still used by some users and is available for download.

Features of Microsoft ActiveSync

  • Connectivity and synchronization may require separately purchased equipment and/or wireless products.
  • Conversion of database files for use on a mobile device is not supported by ActiveSync.
  • Conversion of font files for use on a mobile device is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5 -- On previous versions, this feature was limited to devices running Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC 2003 and earlier.
  • Customers using Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 with devices running the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0
  • Faster file transfer speed and photo sync via Outlook are only available for Windows Mobile 5.0 powered devices.
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000 is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5
  • Remote PC Sync (via WiFi or LAN) has been removed.

Compatibility and License

Microsoft ActiveSync is provided under a freeware license on Windows from mobile phone tools with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 4.5 is the latest version last time we checked.
